A product built only on top of an API is renting its entire value proposition from someone else's roadmap, and that lease can be canceled without notice.
The Details:
The clearest diagnostic is a thought experiment: if the underlying model got ten times smarter overnight, would your offering gain value or vanish? Thin wrappers get absorbed because the model starts doing natively what the wrapper used to bolt on. Genuine products get stronger, because a sharper model makes the surrounding workflow, data, and integrations perform better, not redundant.
Strip the AI out entirely and check what remains. If there's a dataset that compounds with every user, a workflow touching systems the model can't see (approval chains, legacy databases, regulatory formats), or a relationship of trust built over time, something real survives. If nothing is left, the AI isn't enhancing a business, it's masquerading as one.
Watch where correction data flows. When users fix mistakes or reveal edge cases, that feedback either strengthens something you own or gets absorbed upstream into the provider's model. The first path builds a compounding advantage; the second quietly trains your own replacement.
The commoditization cycle is remarkably regular: a capability sits at the model's edge, someone wraps it into a clean tool and gains traction, and within twelve to eighteen months the provider folds that capability into the core product. PDF summarizers, simple agent loops, and basic code explainers have already cycled through this exact pattern.
The fix for a founder mid-build is rarely a full rebuild. It's identifying which narrow, unglamorous, high-friction job your users actually do, then building so deep into that specific workflow that no general-purpose interface will bother to compete there.
Bottom Line: The safest place to build with AI is wherever the model is structurally bad and likely to stay that way, not wherever it happens to be good today.
